Macdonalds Beach Cottages | Nananu-i-ra Island
Imagine... you have had a long day exploring the island, swam and snorkeled from the beach, and spend some time snoozing in the hammock. You might have taken a 5 minute walk to the other side of the island and asked at Safari Lodge if you could get some SUP ( Stand Up Paddle ) lessons and hire a board tomorrow. After all, how hard can it be??
Now it's time to put your order in with Filo for dinner. She is just the BEST cook, and has been here for many years. Ensure your phone and tablet have been charged up (the generator goes off at about 10pm). What will you have tonight – perhaps the beef curry with rice, roti, and dahl soup? Whatever you choose, it will be delicious.
The Accommodation
You can choose from a range of self contained cottages, or if you are planning a longer stay and need to cut costs, go with the dorm.
Prices range from fj$26 a night in the dorm, to fj$145 for a 2 bedroom self contained cottage, All utensils are supplied including crockery, cutlery, stove, fridge, cooking utensils and linen. (prices are old and out of date, but at least give you a ballpark figure).
There are no phones or TV, but as they say on their website, "listen to the sea, or watch the stars instead."
TIP: Make sure you bring a few essential items with you. Torch and batteries, power pack for recharging your devices when the generators aren’t running, some good insect repellent, and perhaps your own snorkeling gear.

Final Thoughts: Pros & Cons
Macdonalds is a place for total relaxation, somewhere to forget the busy world you left behind and just let the stress gently wash away. No T.V, no light pollution, just sit on the porch on a dark night with a glass of wine and look at the stars. Somehow, they seem bigger and brighter here. There is almost total silence, other than the faint sound of waves lapping on the beach.
It's a slow pace of life on Nananu-i-ra island. "Maybe I will go for a swim... or maybe I will just lie in the hammock and finish that book" It's up to you. But whatever you choose to do, one thing's for sure. You will go home feeling a lot better about life than when you arrived.
Would We Stay Here? Yes, and have done so. We have been invited back again on our next trip that way, and we are really looking forward to it. Filo's cooking awaits!
Pros: Stunningly beautiful area with not many people around. Good snorkelling with lots of tropical fish to see, right off the beach. People on the island are super friendly and helpful.
Cons: Takes a bit more effort to get there. If you forget anything important it's not like you can just walk to a shop and pick up what you need. Being on the leeward side of the island, can get a few too many mozzies on a still evening.
